Yemeni government forces have advanced into the southern city of Mukalla which has been in the hands of Al-Qaeda militants for the past year.

Mukalla is the capital of Yemen's largest province, Hadramawt. The militants also won control of a major oil center and sea port in southern Yemen.

Medical sources in Yemen told the BBC that al-Bahri who was also known as Abu Jandal, died on Saturday at a hospital in Mukalla in the southern province of Hadhramaut.
