In 1821, a whole bunch of new nations had just exploded into existence: Mexico, Gran Colombia, Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, Peru.

In 1819, he founded and led Gran Colombia, the  first independent country in South America. Today Venezuela, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru,   and Panama consider him their national hero.
