Around 982 A.D., Erik the Red was accused of killing his neighbor, so he  fled with his family to a small pair of islands off the coast of Iceland.

During the next three years of his exile, Erik the Red explored the island  and made plans to construct a settlement on its southwestern coast, which was largely ice-free.
