Also called the Black Death, the plague of the Middle Ages started in the mid-1300s and killed millions of people and remains one of the deadliest pandemics in human history.

As the death  toll for the future waves was reduced - and far fewer victims contracted the Black Death – the  lifespan for most of the remaining Europeans was longer than before the plague struck.
